What is EMS training and how does it work?

EMS training (electrical muscle stimulation) is exercise performed in a suit fitted with electrodes that send low-frequency electrical impulses to the major muscle groups, triggering contractions while you move. Because the muscle contracts both from your own nervous system and from the external impulse, a session is shorter — typically 20 minutes — than a comparable session without stimulation.

Is EMS better than conventional gym training?

Neither is universally better — they solve different problems. EMS makes sense when time is the constraint and you need supervised strength training in 20 minutes. The gym makes sense when you have several hours a week, want to build endurance and lifting technique, and care more about cost per session than about saved time.

How much does EMS training cost?

At Forma X in Ljubljana an intro EMS session costs €20, and a single session costs €47 individually or €38 per person when training as a pair. An 8-session package is €360 individually (€45 per session) or €280 per person as a pair (€35 per session). The price includes a personal trainer, EMS suit rental, a private space, a protein shake and parking.

Is EMS training safe?

EMS is safe when performed under qualified supervision, with gradual intensity progression and respect for the contraindications. The 2023 international guideline explicitly advises against unsupervised whole-body EMS and recommends one 20-minute session per week for the first 8–10 weeks, because progressing too quickly raises the risk of excessive muscle breakdown.

Does EMS help with lower back pain?

A 2018 randomised controlled trial in adults with chronic non-specific low back pain found a significant reduction in pain intensity compared with a control group after ten whole-body EMS sessions. EMS can therefore help with chronic non-specific pain, but it is not appropriate for acute injury, inflammation, or pain with a clear structural diagnosis without prior medical assessment.

How often should I train with EMS?

International guidelines for whole-body EMS recommend one 20-minute session per week for the first 8 to 10 weeks. After that conditioning phase frequency can increase, leaving at least four days between highly intense sessions. For most people that means one to two sessions a week — more doesn't produce better results, it just adds load.

Does EMS help with weight loss?

EMS helps mainly by preserving and building muscle mass, which improves body composition — meta-analyses confirm effects of whole-body EMS on body composition and muscle strength in non-athletes. The energy burned during a 20-minute session is too small to be the main lever for weight loss: without adjusted nutrition and daily movement, the number on the scale stays put.

What happens during a first EMS session?

A first visit takes about 60 minutes: a consultation about your goals and health, getting into the EMS suit, a short familiarisation phase, roughly 20 minutes of guided training at lower intensity, then recovery and a protein shake. All you bring is clean indoor trainers — the suit, towel, water and bathroom kit are provided.
